Overall impression

Caves Aliança Vermute 1L is the large-format vermouth of a brand founded in 1927 in Sangalhos (Bairrada, Anadia) by eleven associates led by Domingos Silva and Ângelo Neves, according to the official history recorded by Bacalhôa. Today Aliança Vinhos de Portugal belongs to Grupo Bacalhôa — majority acquisition in 2007 — and exports wines, sparkling wines and spirits to some sixty countries. The vermouth forms part of the Portuguese aperitivo imagination of wine shop and supermarket: classic, accessible and intended for family gatherings. 17% vol., 1 L. For Vermutpedia, it represents historic Portuguese litre vermouth: semisweet, herbal and highly identifiable in retail.

Nose and palate

Classic profile of Portuguese shelf vermouth: sweet herbal nose, spices and soft integrated bitterness, without premium complexity ambition. On the palate it is round, of moderate sweetness and gentle passage, easy to drink very cold. The 17% vol. brings alcoholic warmth compared with Spanish vermouths at 15% — typical format of higher-strength Portuguese aperitivos. Direct texture, short-to-medium finish, balance oriented towards social consumption. It does not compete with premium solera vermouths: it is the everyday reference of Caves Aliança in the traditional channel. Coherent with the aperitif range alongside the house's sparkling wines and spirits.

How to serve it

It works between 8 and 12 °C, alone or with soda — the natural format of litre vermouth in Portugal. Serve in a wide glass with ice for terraces and family meals; also in simple combinations with tonic when soft bitterness is sought. The litre favours gatherings, traditional bars and economical replenishment. Pairs with salted appetisers, cheeses, pickles and petiscos. It does not demand elaborate mixology: it is shared-table aperitivo. For Vermutpedia, Caves Aliança Vermute is the Bairrada large-format option for cold, social consumption.

Production context

Aliança Vinhos de Portugal S.A. — formerly Caves Aliança S.A. — produces in Sangalhos (Bairrada): aromatised wine with herb and flower infusions according to Portuguese vermouth tradition. 17% vol., 1 L. More than 50% of the house's production goes to export; Bacalhôa highlights the Aliança Underground Museum in the underground cellars of Sangalhos, where sparkling wines, spirits and wines coexist with art collections. Contains sulphites. For Vermutpedia, Caves Aliança Vermute 1L synthesises classic Portuguese retail vermouth: Bairrada, litre, 17% vol. and history verifiable at bacalhoa.pt/pt/alianca.
