Overall impression

Vermut Cantera is the vermouth project of Bodegas J.E.R., a family Rioja firm with origins in 1954 (Azofra) and current bodega in Huércanos (Alto Najerilla), now run by Eva Cantera, third generation. Launched after years of internal development, it opts for local Viura macerated with selected herbs and passage through American oak, in small batches to maintain quality.

Nose and palate

Cherry red with copper edges. Citrus nose — orange peel — intertwined with wormwood and gentian; cinnamon, smoked wood and Mediterranean spices complete the bouquet. On the palate broad sensations, balance between sweetness and bitterness, aftertaste of orange and cinnamon macerated in liqueur.

How to serve it

Very cold, neat or with ice and orange peel; in classic cocktails where a Riojan vermouth adds citrus freshness. Wine-tourism visits at the bodega include the artisan vermouth process.

Production context

Viura macerated in 225-litre American oak barrels with a blend of herbs (wormwood, gentian, orange peel, aromatic spices). Production limited per batch (~2,000 litres according to distributors). 15% vol., 75 cl. Bodega with 524 barrels and vineyards of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura in Alto Najerilla.
