Overall impression

Vermut Friki XVII Botánicos is the aged vermouth reference of Enológica Wamba (Pampliega, Burgos), sold under the Vino Friki brand by Alfonso Sicilia —with Philippe Cesco in the project—. Per vinofriki.com, it is made from adapted 1850 formulas, keeping much of the essence of original Turin vermouths: selected herbs macerated with wine for one month and five months' barrel ageing. Seventeen botanicals; the house claims 100% natural production without added sugars, caramel or artificial essences. 15% vol.; indicative price €15 at the official shop. For Vermutpedia, it is Burgos author vermouth with historic-recipe soul: Pampliega, barrel and declared botany against the same house's Friki Vermut F2, without ageing.

Pending evaluation.

How to serve it

Very cold, neat or with ice and citrus, as a dry, structured aperitivo. The house describes a silky passage with a sweet start that quickly turns to soft bitterness: serve chilled so herbs and bitter finish stay clear. Pairs with Castilian cured meats, aged cheese and village tapas. Also in dry cocktails such as Martini or Manhattan when short-aged artisan vermouth is wanted. Distinct from Friki Vermut F2 (dry, no barrel) from the same bodega.

Production context

Enológica Wamba S.L., Travesía del Arco 8A (also cited Calle el Puente 7), 09220 Pampliega (Burgos). Made by Alfonso Sicilia; Vino Friki brand. Recipe inspired by an 1850 Turin vermouth book, recovered by the bodega per Retail Actual and house communication. Not under a DO; chemical-free viticulture in the house narrative. Sibling of Friki Vermut / F2 (dry, no ageing). Contact: contacto@enologicawamba.com; +34 662 07 30 38.
