Vermouth with soda

The quintessential Spanish ritual: red vermouth with soda, ice, and an orange slice or olive. Simple, social, and the best way to know a bottle.

Glass
Balloon glass or wide tumbler
Yield
1 aperitif

Ingredients

  • 60–80 ml Red vermouth
  • 40–60 ml Cold soda or siphon
  • 1 slice Orange or green olive (garnish)
  • Ice Large cubes

Method

  1. Fill a balloon glass or wide tumbler with ice cubes.
  2. Pour well-chilled red vermouth (ideally 6–8 °C).
  3. Top with cold soda without over-stirring.
  4. Garnish with a squeezed orange slice or green olive.

Tips

  • 2:1 or 3:2 vermouth-to-soda ratio to taste; more soda = more refreshing and less alcohol.
  • Works with tap or bottled vermouth; Spanish and Italian rosso reserves are the most common choice.

Frequently asked questions

Vermouth with soda or tonic?

Soda is the classic choice (more neutral); tonic adds quinine and extra bitterness. Both work depending on vermouth and mood.

Do I need to stir?

One gentle turn integrates vermouth and soda; do not shake to avoid losing gas or over-diluting.

Which red vermouth to start with?

Yzaguirre Clásico or Miró Rojo are accessible entry points; a reserve like Yzaguirre Reserva elevates home aperitif.
