61 Vermouth Verdejo
Overall impression
Bodega Cuatro Rayas's «61» was the first 100% Verdejo winery vermouth on the Spanish market, launched in 2018 from La Seca — the town the winery defines as the birthplace of Verdejo. The bet is not cosmetic: the blend mixes 50% young Verdejo and 50% barrel-fermented Verdejo on lees so the grape speaks before the caramel. Bottled in a sherry-style bottle, it asserts its vinous personality against white vermouths tinted without varietal identity.
Nose and palate
Mahogany colour with amber highlights — surprising for a white-grape vermouth, the result of botanical maceration and the barrel-aged part of the blend. Intense nose: bitter orange, cinnamon, liquorice, fennel and rosemary, evoking the Castilian scrubland. On the palate, balance between moderate sweetness and a pleasant bitter finish; balsamic persistence coherent with the nose. 90 points Peñín (Spirits and Cocktails 2018).
How to serve it
At 6–8 °C, over ice with citrus. Pairs with olives, cockles, pickled mussels and classic Castilian tapas.
