Overall impression

Carpano Rosso — marketed as Classico — is the classic Italian red vermouth of Casa Carpano, made by Fratelli Branca Distillerie in Turin. Considered exceptional by professional bartenders as the element needed for perfect, rule-abiding cocktails. Its base structure descends from the original recipe invented by Antonio Benedetto Carpano in 1786. Decisive, with Carpano character that shows in mixology: citrus notes and persistence on the palate. 16% vol., usual 1 litre format. The standard Branca/Carpano line versus Antica Formula and Punt e Mes: traditional sweet-bitter vermouth, balanced and smooth, essential in Negroni, Americano and Carpano Spritz. Distinct from generic industrial reds, it uses caramelised sugar — zucchero bruciato — as colourant and distinctive aromatic note, alongside fresh bitter orange and assenzio.

Nose and palate

Amber-red colour with topaz reflections. Bold, warm and rich in characteristic botanical notes: cardamom, honey and cinnamon. On the palate the initial flavour is sweet and fortified thanks to burnt sugar; it evolves toward spice and wine notes, closing with citrus persistence. Spiced and citrus notes harmonise, complemented by assenzio aromas for a balanced, mellow vermouth unique in its kind. Broad texture, round passage, persistent wormwood finish. Compared with Antica Formula — 16.5% vol., vanilla, saffron, historic premium — Classico is more direct and accessible in daily cocktail work. Versus Punt e Mes — semisweet-bitter, quinine, 1870 legend — Rosso is sweeter and less bitter.

How to serve it

Designed to serve very cold neat — classic Turin aperitif that highlights balanced sweet-bitterness and citrus persistence. Also with ice and orange peel, in Negroni, Americano or Carpano Spritz. Works in Smashed Carpano and classic-style cocktails when Italian red vermouth with Carpano character is wanted. Pairs with olives, pickles and Mediterranean aperitifs. 1 litre format, 16% vol.
