Vermut Garate
Overall impression
Vermut Garate is the official vermouth reference of Txakoli Garate, a family winery in Laudio (Araba, DO Arabako Txakolina) that Josu Egoitz Zubiaur — fourth generation, trained as a chef — professionalised in 2006. Marketed as «Vermut de Txakoli con Hierbas Autóctonas Premium» on a black label with botanical illustrations; it must not be confused with Vermut Txantxangorri from Pista Corta Bodegas (white robin label), a different product documented separately in Vermutpedia. Made from txakoli from the Sugesu parcel (Hondarrabi Zuri), hand-harvested and aromatised with native herbs according to txakoligarate.com. Dark amber colour; €18 RRP in the official shop.
Nose and palate
The winery describes an intense, broad nose with aromatic herbs, spiced touches and balsamic notes. On the palate, soft, with fresh aromatic flavours and a sweet, bitter, balanced finish. Guía AkataVino (92 points, 2023) highlights intensity, herbs and a sensation of frosted fruit, placing it among the year's essential vermouths. The 100% Hondarrabi Zuri txakoli base brings Atlantic tension; no citrus or orange in the declared formula.
How to serve it
Official serving temperature: 8–10 °C. Very cold in an aperitivo glass, with ice or in light mixed drinks. Fits pintxos, conservas and Basque cuisine. 75 cl bottle at txakoligarate.com and specialist distributors.
Production context
Txakoli Garate cultivates about 4 ha on the Garate hill with Hondarrabi Zuri, Zerratia and Riesling, mostly organic treatments. Production: Sugesu txakoli, manual harvest in 10 kg boxes, destemming, maceration and low-pressure pressing, controlled-temperature stainless-steel fermentation; aromatisation with native herbs and fermentation in tanks with no declared barrel ageing. SKU TX-VERMU-GARATE. The winery's sole vermouth reference alongside young txakolis and Irríbarra. For Vermutpedia, Garate synthesises verifiable Álava txakoli vermouth at txakoligarate.com.
