Viva La Virgen Vermut is the vermouth of Sacrilegio Wines (Elgoibar, Guipúzcoa), irreverent project of Carlos Lahoz (Miravientos Distributions). 'Democratic' Basque vermouth: neither very bitter nor very sweet, versatile for glass or cocktail work according to the Ondojan interview. Godello and Sauvignon Blanc base with botanicals of wormwood, lemon verbena, cinnamon, vanilla and anise. Classic bottle with beer-type crown and soda-cap closure for better preservation. It sits in the Miravientos ecosystem alongside gildas and the Sacrilegio canned line — vermouth as social, playful aperitivo rather than solemn wine culture.

Nose and palate

Reddish mahogany colour with orange reflections. Nose: wood, wormwood and spice (cinnamon, vanilla). Palate slightly sweet, herbal and spiced; young, balanced and vinous according to Vermuteros.com. Short aftertaste, soft finish with slight bitterness. Godello adds body and Sauvignon Blanc contributes citrus lift — an unusual white-grape base for a 'red' vermouth that reads more as amber-toned and vinous than caramel-heavy.

How to serve it

Very cold in a low glass with ice and orange slice; pairing with gildas or crisps. Works as terrace vermouth without ceremony — the crown cap invites casual consumption and repeat pours through an afternoon of pintxos.
