The whiskey Negroni: bourbon or rye, red bitter, and sweet vermouth. Warm, spiced, and born in 1920s Paris.
- Glass
- Rocks or cocktail glass
- Yield
- 1 cocktail
Ingredients
- 35 ml Bourbon (or rye whiskey)
- 30 ml Campari
- 30 ml Red vermouth
- 1 twist Orange peel (garnish)
Method
- Combine bourbon, Campari, and vermouth in a mixing glass with ice.
- Stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled.
- Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice or a chilled cocktail glass.
- Express an orange twist over the glass and discard or leave as garnish.
Tips
- Many recipes use 1:1:1 like the Negroni; others raise whiskey to 35–45 ml for more body.
- Rye brings more spice; bourbon makes a rounder, sweeter Boulevardier.
Frequently asked questions
Boulevardier or Negroni?
Negroni uses gin (dry and herbal); Boulevardier swaps gin for whiskey (warmer and spicier). Same bitter + vermouth structure.
Bourbon or rye?
Bourbon is most common today; rye was creator Harry McElhone's preference in Paris. Try both.
Which red vermouth works best?
A rosso with body and spice that stands up to whiskey: Antica Formula, Punt e Mes, or Spanish solera reserves.
