Ingredients

  • 60 ml Rye whiskey (or bourbon)
  • 30 ml Red vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 cherry Maraschino (garnish, optional)

Method

  2. Stir until chilled (about 30 seconds).
  3. Strain into a well-chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with a maraschino cherry or an orange twist.

Tips

  • Rye brings spice and dryness; bourbon makes a rounder Manhattan.
  • A 2:1 ratio is standard; try 5:2 if you prefer more whiskey.

Which vermouth should I choose?

Red with depth and spice notes; Spanish reserves such as Perucchi also work very well.
