Vermut Rojo Calla i Beu
Vermutpedia Score: 9.1/10
Overall impression
Calla i Beu Rojo is Cup de la Muntanya's mountain Mediterranean vermouth from Planes (El Comtat, Alicante), a family bodega specialising in natural high-altitude wines. Made with Muscat of Alexandria from traditional La Marina Alta vineyards and local botanicals from El Comtat, l'Alcoià and Marina Alta, it draws on medieval recipe inspiration with a local character. Cup de la Muntanya conceives it as mountain vermouth from Alicante: muscat base, mountain herbs — wormwood, clove, thyme, fennel — and final maceration with orange peel. Semisweet, broad on the palate, with contained sweetness and a bitter finish that invites another sip. One of the most distinctive artisan vermouths from inland Alicante.
Nose and palate
Intense, sweet, fresh nose: Mediterranean herbs, elegant spice and orange citrus over muscat. In the glass, marked herbal notes — thyme, fennel, rosemary — with the roundness typical of semisweet muscat vermouth. On the palate, a savoury, ample entry; moderate sweetness without cloying, and a long, lightly bitter finish with orange persistence. Keeps a herbal, territorial identity against industrial sweetened vermouths. Vermutpedia Score 9.1: an exceptional artisan red in its Alicante category, with enough personality to drink neat.
How to serve it
Very cold (5–8 °C), with plenty of ice, orange peel, olive or lemon twist, or simply neat — ideal for aperitif or a long after-meal drink. Serve in a small glass or tumbler, where chill balances muscat sweetness without dulling herbal bitterness. Also works in Negroni or Americano when you want a Spanish red with local spice. Pairs with charcuterie, aged cheese, pickles and mountain Alicante cooking. More body and sweetness than the white in the range; the classic aperitif reference in the pair.
Production context
Cup de la Muntanya makes Calla i Beu in the Montaña de Alicante (Planes, El Comtat). The bodega aims for balance between sweetness, bitterness and acidity, fixed with quality grape spirit. 15% vol., 70 cl bottle. Unaged in barrel. Sibling of Calla i Beu Blanco, on mountain white wine.
