Overall impression

Vermutpedia is re-evaluating the Italian catalogue; the Vermutpedia Score for this entry remains pending until the new tasting round is complete. Gancia Vermouth Rosso is Casa Gancia's classic vermouth in Canelli (Asti), one of the founding houses of Italian vermouth since 1850 and pioneer in exporting it as base of made in Italy aperitifs, according to gancia.it. Prepared with quality wines and selected aromatic herbs according to the house's secret formula, it maintains nineteenth-century roots and presence in hospitality and mixology. Historic Consorzio Vermouth di Torino member. 16% vol. on official sheet — Vermutpedia records 16.5% in some markets. For Vermutpedia, it represents high-consumption Italian rosso: caramelised sweetness, herbal and very balanced for Americano and spritz.

Nose and palate

Copper-red colour according to official visual exam. Particularly rich, intense nose, obtained by maceration of crushed herbs and spices in wine-based alcoholic solution. On the palate, caramelised sweet, aromatic, pleasantly bitter and persistent taste — official Gancia description. Round texture, easy passage, balance between semisweet sweetness and wormwood and local herb bitterness — absinthe, clove — alongside exotic varieties. Compared with Gancia Vermouth di Torino Rosso —17% vol., more marked citrus and spiced notes—, classic Rosso is sweeter and more caramelised. Ideal profile as base for pre-dinner and after-dinner drinks.

How to serve it

Gancia recommends serving between 6 and 8 °C. Works in Americano, spritz or with soda — classic Piedmont formats — also in northwest Italian cuisine where rosso vermouth brings sweetness and bitterness. Serve in wide glass with ice and orange for aperitif; in Negroni when seeking traditional, accessible rosso. Pairs with olives, charcuterie, cheeses and salty appetisers. No complex elaboration required: bar and home vermouth with centuries of tradition. For Vermutpedia, Gancia Rosso is the documented Italian base at gancia.it.

Production context

Casa Gancia makes Rosso in Canelli in three phases: selection of neutral young wine, extraction of herbal essences in liquid ~30% alc. and final blend with fortified wine, sugar and extracts before filtration and tank rest. Ingredients: preferably young wines and selected herbs. 16% vol. Historic range with Bianco —world's first Vermouth Bianco according to the house—, Extra Dry and Vermouth di Torino Rosso. Contains sulphites. For Vermutpedia, Gancia Vermouth Rosso synthesises classic Italian vermouth: Canelli, secret formula, semisweet profile and official tasting verifiable at gancia.it/it/vini-and-aperitivi/vermouth-specialita/rosso-gancia/.
