Overall impression

Vermut La Alegre Carmela is the artisan white vermouth of Bodegas Sampayolo in Petín (Ourense), a small family winery founded in 2002 by Javier García in the Valdeorras denomination. According to sampayolo.com they produce around 32,000 bottles a year of Godello, Mencía and Garnacha with a clear point of view and wines with stories; the white Carmela comes from Godello and Palomino of the Valdeorras zone, a homage to vermouth tradition from a tiny winery with unmistakable Galician soul. Fruity, long and elegant profile; the perfect aperitif with Valdeorras character. Also sold in 5 L hospitality format. Fifteen percent alcohol, 75 cl bottle. For Vermutpedia it is the benchmark artisan Galician white vermouth: Godello–Palomino, Petín, Sampayolo and aperitif elegance verifiable in the official shop.

Nose and palate

La Alegre Carmela white is built on Valdeorras Godello and Palomino, grapes that bring minerality, white fruit and vinous structure to the vermouth profile. On the nose, white fruit, Godello floral notes, Palomino nuances and macerated aromatic herbs, with Galician elegance and aromatic length. On the palate, fruity semisweet entry, balance between Valdeorras freshness and aperitif sweetness, subtle botanical bitterness on the finish. Long, elegant texture, amiable aftertaste that confirms its positioning as the house's perfect aperitif. Less industrial than high-volume vermouths; more personal and territorial, coherent with Sampayolo's philosophy of wines with their own criteria. Fifteen percent alcohol, 75 cl, no declared barrel ageing. Compared with red Carmela (Mencía), the white is brighter and more mineral; for anyone who knows Sampayolo's lees-aged Godello, Carmela is its vermouth side.

How to serve it

La Alegre Carmela is served cold, on ice at vermouth hour, where its fruity, elegant profile accompanies local cheeses and charcuterie from Valdeorras. At 6–8 °C in a small glass or wide tumbler with ice and lemon or orange twist, Godello–Palomino speaks clearly. Also in spritz with soda or tonic for a Galician terrace, or in light cocktails that respect its white-fruity character. The 5 L hospitality format lets bars in Ourense and Galicia that already know Sampayolo work the Carmela on list. Pair with Galician cheeses, preserves, octopus and appetisers from inland Ourense.
