Overall impression

Marnuthem Licor Amargo is the bitter liqueur of Marc Cuenca and Núria Sánchez in Bell-lloc d'Urgell (Pla d'Urgell, Lleida): not a vermouth, but a high-ABV liqueur inspired by Italian bitters and amari, meant as aperitif, digestif or cocktail base. According to retailers and the house, it fuses natural botanicals — roots, flowers, bitter orange peel and fruits — in an artisan formula from the same line as the Blanc and Rosé. 28% vol., 70 cl, indicative price €28.50 at marnuthem.com. In 2024 the first batch won a design award and Spain Country Winner / gold in World's Best Bitters at the World Liqueur Awards. For Vermutpedia, it completes the Marnuthem map beyond vermouth: a Catalan bar bitter with contemporary amaro vocation from Pla d'Urgell.

Nose and palate

Pending evaluation.

How to serve it

Neat or on ice as aperitif or digestif; also in cocktails that call for red bitter or amaro (Negroni, Americano, bitter spritz). The 28% ABV recommends plentiful ice or soda dilution for longer sessions. Orange garnish highlights the bitter peel in the botanical profile. Pairs with salty snacks, nuts and assertive tapas. It does not replace the house Blanc or Rosé vermouth: it fills the bar-bitter slot.

Production context

According to shop sheets and marnuthem.com: about three months' maceration with natural botanicals, flowers, roots, bitter orange peel and fruits; filtration, blending with sugar and one month's rest to integrate; no chemical sulphiting or stabilisers according to commercial description (sulphites declared as allergen). Official ingredients: alcohol, sugar, botanicals and fruit. 28% vol., 70 cl. Marnuthem project since 2018 in Bell-lloc d'Urgell; World Liqueur Awards 2024 (World's Best Bitters, Spain). Range with Vermouth Blanc, Rosé and lots at marnuthem.com. For Vermutpedia, Marnuthem Licor Amargo synthesises artisan Lleida bitter: 28% vol., bitter orange and botanicals, 70 cl, verifiable at marnuthem.com.
