Overall impression
Vermut Murcarols Negro Reserva is the flagship and bestseller of Murcarols (La Pobla de Lillet, Alt Berguedà): 16% vol., hydroalcoholic base with Moscatel and double maceration in American oak casks with the house herbs, per Jaume Curtichs in El Periódico. Deliberate balance «neither sweet nor bitter». Sepa Distribució describes ruby red with brick tones and amber glints; intense Artemisia nose (100+ species cited on the trade sheet), oregano and caramel; frank sweet palate, bitter finish, prolonged herbal aftertaste. About six months in cask for the 1 L bottle (~four months for 5 L bag-in-box, same product). Continuity of avi Josep Curtichs's formula —shepherd's wine, Cretan dittany, Can Mucarols— approaching the 2026 centenary. For Vermutpedia, it is the house historic Pyrenean red-reserva.
Nose and palate
Pending evaluation. Trade sheet: Artemisia, oregano, caramel; sweet palate with bitter close and herbal aftertaste. Local press (Regió7): dark mahogany, Berguedà balsamics, liquorice and clove; honeyed entry.
How to serve it
With ice and orange peel to lift aromas (Sepa). Very cold at Carrer de l'Església, 4 vermutería with Berguedà boards. Light-guarda aperitif; also 5 L bag-in-box for hospitality/home. Less floral-citrus than the Blanco; more structure, wood and caramel.
