Overall impression

Vermutpedia is re-evaluating the Italian catalogue; the Vermutpedia Score for this entry remains pending until the next tasting round. Chazalettes Rosso della Regina is a Vermouth di Torino based on red wine — not coloured white wine — made according to Clemente Chazalettes' authentic 1876 recipe, when the house founded its bottega in Turin. The brand was revived by Giovanni Chazalettes together with the Bava family, Cocchi producers, recovering handwritten formulas and marginal notes accumulated over decades. The name «della Regina» honours Queen Margherita of Savoy, who in 1907 granted Chazalettes the royal patent and use of the Royal House shield on its labels — a tradition that endures today. Unlike most modern reds, it employs Barbera from the Bava family itself with a touch of Nebbiolo as base, bringing deeper colour and texture with greater «bite» than standard red vermouths. At 16.5% vol. with Piedmontese and exotic botanicals, it is one of the most distinctive Vermouth di Torino within the Consorzio.

Nose and palate

The organoleptic profile of Rosso della Regina is defined by wormwood as obligatory axis, complemented by Piedmontese herbs — savory and marjoram — and more exotic notes of ambrette and coriander. On the nose, a medium red emerges with mountain character: gentian, citrus and spices in layers that anticipate noble bitterness. Colour comes from the red-wine base — Barbera and Nebbiolo — not caramel over white, conferring greater visual and textural density. On the palate, semisweet sweetness is balanced by spices and prolonged bitterness; the finish is long and complex, with herbaceous persistence and a close that invites another sip. Production separates maceration of each ingredient — dried, chopped and infused separately — before adding extracts to the wine, which represents 75% of the final product. Recognised with 95 points in Wine Enthusiast 2024 and silver at IWSC 2022.

How to serve it

Chazalettes proposes Vermouth & Soda: 60 ml Rosso, a splash of soda and orange twist. For a more bitter profile, Torino Milano — 45 ml Rosso, 45 ml Campari bitter and two drops cherry bitter, with two amarena cherries and lemon twist — reproduces the spirit of the Turin aperitivo. In Rob Roy — 22.5 ml Rosso, 45 ml blended Scotch and 7.5 ml Islay — it brings sweetness and spice without dominating the whisky. Also works in classic Americano, Negroni or alone with ice and orange, where its red-wine base and noble bitterness stand out against sweeter, more uniform commercial reds.

Production context

Chazalettes & Co. was born in Turin in 1876; Giovanni Chazalettes, heir to the founder, preserved the family's nineteenth-century recipes. The relaunch with the Bava family — Cantine Bava, Cocchi producers — allows the three Vermouth della Regina — Rosso, Bianco and Extra Dry — to be made according to original formulas. Rosso macerates wormwood, cardamom, coriander, savory, marjoram and ambrette in alcohol and water solution; each extract is added separately to the wine. 16.5% vol., 75 cl. Member of the Consorzio Vermouth di Torino. Distribution via Cocchi and specialist importers in international markets.
