Chazalettes Vermouth Bianco della Regina
Overall impression
Vermutpedia is re-evaluating the Italian catalogue; the Vermutpedia Score for this entry remains pending until the next tasting round. Chazalettes Vermouth Bianco della Regina embodies one of the most refined expressions of contemporary Vermouth di Torino white. The house, founded in Turin in 1876, recovered its historic recipes in 2016 when new energy convinced Giovanni Chazalettes — heir to the dynasty and custodian of the family formula book — to resume production that had ceased in the 1970s. The name «della Regina» is not mere marketing: in 1907 Queen Margherita of Savoy granted Chazalettes the right to display the Royal House of Savoy emblem, a distinction the label still preserves as testimony to its prestige at the Savoy court. The white distinguishes itself by an intense perfume of flowers and fruits where Piedmontese wormwood coexists with sweet citrus, coriander, angelica and aromatic cardamom. Gentian and rhubarb bring bitterness that balances the natural sweetness of the base wine. At 16.5% vol. and 75 cl bottle, it has earned gold at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles Spirits 2024 and 93 points from Wine Enthusiast 2024.
Nose and palate
In the glass, Bianco della Regina unfolds a floral and fruity bouquet of great intensity, coherent with the winery's official description. Piedmontese Alpine wormwood marks vermouth character from the first instant, but does not dominate: candied citrus and sweet peel notes bring luminosity, while coriander and angelica raise the spiced register towards an elegant herbaceous profile. Perfumed cardamom adds a subtle exotic layer that recalls Turin's tradition of importing spices from the East. On the palate, the natural sweetness of white vermouth remains present without cloying thanks to the bitter counterpoint of gentian and rhubarb, two classic Vermouth di Torino botanicals that close with persistence and freshness. Texture is round and silky, with balance between sweetness, bitterness and acidity that invites another sip and explains repeated mentions in international competitions.
How to serve it
Chazalettes itself proposes three combinations that make the most of the white's floral and fruity profile. Royal Mimosa mixes one and a half parts vermouth with one ounce freshly squeezed orange juice, topped with sparkling white wine, garnished with orange slice and mint leaves: an elegant brunch that enhances the vermouth's fruit. Adonis, a pre-Prohibition cocktail classic, combines equal parts Bianco and fino sherry with a dash of lemon bitter, no garnish, for a dry, complex aperitivo. Gin & Flower unites vermouth and London dry gin with a touch of lavender and dried flower garnish, ideal for those seeking a more aromatic profile. It also works magnificently alone with ice and a mint leaf, in the line of traditional Piedmontese aperitivo.
Production context
Chazalettes produces its vermouths as Vermouth di Torino following original recipes guarded by Giovanni Chazalettes in a family archive that survived the production halt in the 1970s. The 2016 relaunch represents a generational encounter between Turin's historic memory and the will to preserve a liqueur heritage the house itself describes as «important heritage of Turin». Bianco della Regina complements Rosso della Regina and Extra Dry as the third pillar of the recovered range. Accumulated awards — silver IWSC 2023 (91 pts), silver IWSC Alternative Drinks 2022 (93 pts), gold CMB Spirits 2024 and 93 pts Wine Enthusiast 2024 — confirm that the bet on historic authenticity finds echo in the current palate. 75 cl bottle at 16.5% vol.
