Overall impression

Vermutpedia is re-evaluating the Italian catalogue; the Vermutpedia Score for this entry remains pending until the next tasting round. Antica Torino Rosso was the first product of the house founded in 2016 by Vittorio Zoppi and Filippo Antonelli, born from months of experimentation at the distillery aiming for an organoleptic masterpiece inspired by the oldest Savoy recipes, according to the technical sheet and anticatorino.com. Thirteen entirely natural botanicals —no pre-made tinctures— worked artisanally and individually; among those declared are wormwood, rhubarb, gentian, rosemary, oregano, vanilla and cumin, combining garden herbs with Piedmontese mountain botanicals and exotic spices. Wine represents 75% of the bottled product; the amber-red colour comes from burned beet sugar. The house places it closer to vermouths drunk in Savoy-city bars during the Belle Époque than to current industrial profiles.

Nose and palate

Rich amber red, clean and consistent. Intense, complex, vinous, spicy and herbaceous nose: bay laurel, rhubarb, gentian, vanilla and citrus peel, per the official description. On the palate, fresh, sweet, alcoholic and savoury; distinct notes of ginger, bay laurel, vanilla and rhubarb, with long persistence. Sweet-bitter balance typical of Vermouth di Torino, with roundness from 5% Moscato must and 18% sugar in the technical sheet.

How to serve it

The house's most immediate serve: on ice with a rosemary sprig and lemon or orange peel. Also in Americano —classic 2:1 or 1:1 per Luca Picchi—, Negroni, Manhattan, Martinez, Boulevardier, Bronx, El Presidente or Hanky-Panky. The house recommends it with London Dry Gin, bourbon or rye whiskey, brandy or traditional amari for its sweet, warm, herbaceous profile.

Production context

18% vol., 18% sugar, 75 cl (also 50 cl per technical sheet). Base: Italian white wine with 5% Moscato must, alcohol and burned beet sugar. Botanical maceration in 96° alcohol for 30 days; pressing and tincture; blend with wine, alcohol and sugar; 45–60 days affinamento in steel and a further 30–45 days in bottle. Antica Torino project since 2016, Torino. Range: Rosso, Bianco and Dry.
