Overall impression

Hernandez Reserva is the premium edition of Portugal's vermouth from Lemos Figueiredo (Alcobaça): inspired by aperitivo culture and centuries-old aromatised wines of the region. On white wine from local wineries, seventeen herbs, roots and fruits — including artemisia — are infused, with maturation in oak barrels from ginjinha liqueur production. A gift-box edition for the gourmet channel; Silver Medal at Spirits Selection 2020. For Vermutpedia, Reserva represents the contemplative summit of the Hernandez line: same Alcobaça DNA as the standard vermouth, but with barrel depth from ex-ginjinha wood, lower alcohol at fifteen degrees and a more meditative, gastronomic profile aimed at collectors and serious aperitivo drinkers rather than everyday bar service.

Nose and palate

Intense herbal, balsamic and citrus aromas; velvety youth balanced with wood maturity. On the palate it is round with balsamic depth and long finish; more contemplative than standard Hernandez in the generalist channel. The seventeen-botanical infusion — artemisia among them — unfolds in layers where citrus brightness meets embalmed herbs and the sweet, rounded note of oak that previously held Alcobaça ginjinha. Barrel ageing integrates botanical bitterness with vanilla and dried-fruit suggestions from the wood, without overwhelming the semisweet balance. Texture is enveloping, persistence long; at 15% vol. it invites slower sipping than the 17% vol. siblings. Compared with Hernandez Vermouth and Rosso, Reserva gains in wood complexity and gastronomic depth; compared with Aperitivo, it trades floral-bitter vibrancy for balsamic contemplation.

How to serve it

Cold with ice and orange peel — the house perfect serve —; also in author cocktails where barrel depth and balsamic herbs should remain audible. Serve very cold between 4 and 8 °C in a small wine or cocktail glass; a single large ice cube preserves concentration better than crushed ice. The gift-box format suits premium gifting, but the liquid rewards unhurried solo service: orange peel expressed over the glass opens citrus that dialogues with wood and artemisia. In cocktails, it elevates a restrained Negroni or a Portuguese twist on Manhattan when ginjinha-barrel roundness is desired; avoid excess mixer that would mask the reserve character. Pairs with aged cheeses, ibérico charcuterie, dark chocolate and post-meal conversation — less a session vermouth than a special-occasion glass from Alcobaça.

Production context

Made in Alcobaça by Adega & Destilaria Lemos Figueiredo. 15% vol., 75 cl. Same adega as Lemos Figueiredo ginjinha and Casanova Dry Gin. Process follows the Hernandez method — local white wine, seventeen herbs, roots and fruits including artemisia — with the distinguishing step of ageing in oak barrels that previously held the house ginjinha liqueur, linking vermouth to Alcobaça's liqueur tradition. Premium gift-box edition for gourmet retail. Sibling of Hernandez Vermouth, Hernandez Rosso, Hernandez Aperitivo and the Casanova spirits line. For Vermutpedia, Hernandez Reserva synthesises the premium Portuguese vermouth bet: artisan Alcobaça production, ginjinha wood, seventeen botanicals and a contemplative profile at 8.5/10 on the Vermutpedia scale.
