Overall impression

Hernandez Rosso forms part of the «o vermouth de Portugal» line from Adega & Destilaria Lemos Figueiredo (Alcobaça). On white wine from local wineries with more than a century of tradition, seventeen herbs, roots and fruits — including artemisia — are infused, with maturation in oak barrels from the house ginjinha liqueur. In some export markets it is marketed as «Rosso» for its intense amber tone, though the official base remains aromatised white wine in Portuguese style. For Vermutpedia, Rosso represents the chromatic, fuller-bodied pole of the Hernandez family: same Alcobaça craftsmanship and ginjinha wood as the classic white vermouth, but with an amber profile and spiced roundness that read «red» on the palate even when the wine base is white — a Portuguese vermouth identity distinct from Italian rosso conventions.

Nose and palate

Intense herbal, balsamic and citrus aromas, with velvety youth balanced by the sweet note of ex-ginjinha wood. On the palate it is round and spiced, with balsamic depth and well-integrated aromatic bitterness. Profile suitable both for contemplative aperitif and author cocktails alongside Hernandez Aperitivo. The seventeen-botanical blend delivers Mediterranean herbs, artemisia bitterness and citrus lift; barrel ageing from ginjinha casks adds warmth, vanilla and a subtle fruit liqueur echo that rounds alcohol without cloying. Semisweet balance keeps the amber profile indulgent yet structured. At 17% vol. it matches the standard Hernandez Vermouth in strength while offering greater chromatic and spiced presence — ideal when a modifier with more body and colour is needed in Portuguese cocktails.

How to serve it

House perfect serve: ice cube and orange peel. Also works in Negroni with Hernandez Aperitivo or in spritz with fresh citrus. Serve very cold at 6–8 °C; the large ice cube and expressed orange peel are non-negotiable elements of the Lemos Figueiredo ritual, opening balsamic and citrus layers while keeping dilution controlled. In the house Negronez, Rosso can substitute for Hernandez Vermouth when more amber body is desired alongside Aperitivo and Casanova Citrus. Spritz with tonic or sparkling wine suits terrace service; solo on ice remains the most faithful expression of Alcobaça craft. Pairs with Portuguese charcuterie, aged cheeses and salted almonds — a vermouth for late afternoon aperitivo with character.

Production context

Made in Alcobaça by Lemos Figueiredo, the same adega as ginjinha and Casanova Dry Gin. 17% vol., 75 cl. Complements Hernandez Vermouth (generalist channel), Hernandez Reserva (15% vol., premium gift box) and the bodega's Aperitivo range. Process: local white wine base, infusion of seventeen herbs, roots and fruits including artemisia, ageing in oak barrels previously used for ginjinha liqueur — linking every Hernandez expression to Alcobaça's distilling heritage. Export naming as «Rosso» reflects intense amber tone rather than red wine base. For Vermutpedia, Hernandez Rosso is the fuller-bodied, amber Hernandez: same adega, same wood, seventeen botanicals, 7.5/10 Vermutpedia Score.
