Negroni Sbagliato

Milan's «wrong Negroni»: bitter and rosso vermouth with prosecco instead of gin. Lighter, bubbly, and famous since Bar Basso.

Glass
Large Old Fashioned or wine glass
Yield
1 cocktail

Ingredients

  • 30 ml Campari
  • 30 ml Red vermouth
  • 30 ml Prosecco or brut cava
  • 1 slice Orange (garnish)

Method

  1. Fill a large glass with ice cubes and an orange slice.
  2. Pour Campari and red vermouth; stir gently to chill.
  3. Top with cold prosecco or brut cava.
  4. Stir once more carefully to preserve the bubbles.

Tips

  • The classic Bar Basso recipe (Milan, 1972) uses equal parts; sparkling wine replaced gin by accident.
  • Use dry sparkling (brut); Italian semi-sweet rosso balances Campari's bitterness.

Frequently asked questions

What does «sbagliato» mean?

Italian for «mistaken». It was born when Bar Basso served prosecco instead of gin while making a Negroni.

Does Negroni Sbagliato contain gin?

No. The definition is replacing gin with sparkling wine. Adding gin makes it a classic Negroni again.

Prosecco or other sparkling?

Bar Basso uses extra dry prosecco. Any dry brut sparkling works; avoid sweet wines that clash with the bitter.
