Americano

Americano is an aromatised wine with a bitter profile, associated with gentian and other botanicals. It also names the cocktail of red vermouth, bitter and soda.

As a wine category, Americano combines sweetness and bitterness with a leading role for roots such as gentian. It should not be confused with amaro, which is a liqueur and does not necessarily start from a wine base.

In cocktails, the Americano mixes red vermouth, bitter and soda: it is a lighter relative of the Negroni. See the guide on vermouth, bitter and Americano to compare them.
