Overall impression

Yzaguirre Herbal Vintage recovers a late-nineteenth-century formula inspired by medicinal aromatised wines and the tradition of Alpine Italian producers. Guía Gourmand chose it as best vermouth of 2020; the bodega reserves it for long after-dinner moments and dinners in good company, when a vermouth for contemplation rather than a quick bar pour is sought. Five years' ageing in a solera-type system in old wooden vats gives the product the «vintage» character its name promises.

Nose and palate

Dark, bright amber. The nose is sweet and spiced, centred on aromatic herbs with a citrus touch — cinnamon, wormwood, angelica, gentian, orange blossom and orange and lemon peel are part of the botanical blend the house details on its blog. On the palate it is harmonious and penetrating, with quinine nuances and balanced alcoholic warmth; the aftertaste is broad, of elegant bitterness and long persistence confirming its vocation as a fine liqueur.

How to serve it

Very cold, neat or with an orange slice or olive; the intensity needs no further complements. The bodega recommends it for relaxed moments at dusk, far from the light spritz of the classic range.

Production context

Extract in bain-marie in the 1884 cauldron, three months' maceration and five years in solera. 15% vol., 75 cl. Up to eighty herbs from the exclusive Yzaguirre formula.
