Overall impression

Yzaguirre Selección 1884 honours the founding year of the Tarragona bodega with the most ambitious vermouth in its catalogue. It is not a bar classic: it demands calm, a generous glass and time. Its long production process — Italian Alpine method perfected over more than a century — confers a consistency that brings the profile close to a fine liqueur, especially through its elevated alcohol.

Nose and palate

Notes of wood, herbs and spices in a dense, mature whole. The aftertaste is very long and distinctive, with intense bitter notes reminiscent of quinine and macerated roots. Full body, almost liqueur-like sensation on the palate, with the depth provided by two years in small old oak barrels.

How to serve it

Cold with an orange slice as a substantial aperitif; or neat, at room temperature, as an end-of-meal glass with chocolate desserts or a good coffee — as the bodega itself recommends.

Production context

Botanical extract of more than 80 herbs and spices: heating in a double-walled cauldron for 14 hours and two months of cold maceration. Blending with base wine, sugar and alcohol; two years' rest in oak barrels to stabilise aroma and colour. Bottled in triennial batches of around 6,000 bottles. 20% vol., 75 cl.
