Mercadal Vermut Reserva Castanyer
Overall impression
Mercadal Vermut Reserva Castanyer is the aged expression of the Mercadal range (Vinum Selecció, Reus): black vermouth rested in chestnut barrels according to the winery. Complex aromatics, confit and roasted, with balsamic notes and fruits in liqueur. The summit of the Mercadal line against the traditional Negre and Blanc. For Vermutpedia, it represents Reus reserve vermouth with chestnut-wood identity — a step up in depth and gastronomic ambition within the same artisan cooperative project.
Nose and palate
Deep Mediterranean profile: confit, roasted, balsamic and fruits in liqueur according to the Vinum sheet. Greater complexity than Negre Tradicional thanks to chestnut wood. On the nose, chestnut ageing brings candied fruit, toasted spice and balsamic depth over the same local-wine and botanical base as the traditional reds; on the palate, semisweet roundness with layered sweetness, moderate wormwood bitterness and a long finish in confit and roasted register. Texture is broader and more contemplative than the Negre, inviting slower drinking. Compared with the Blanc and Negre tradicionales, Castanyer adds wood integration and liqueur-fruit persistence that justify the higher price point (~€11.20 RRP). A reserve for palates seeking Reus vermouth with guarda character without leaving the Mercadal family.
How to serve it
Serve between 8 and 10 °C; author aperitif or light digestif. One litre, ~€11.20 RRP. In a cocktail glass or small balloon without excess ice, the chestnut-aged profile rewards slow tasting where confit and balsamic notes can evolve. Also works with a bitter orange slice or green olive to lift the roasted register. Pairs with aged cheeses, nuts, dark chocolate and Catalan charcuterie. Less suited to soda-heavy terrace consumption than the traditional Negre: Castanyer asks for a more deliberate glass. For Vermutpedia, Mercadal Reserva Castanyer is drunk cool, with restraint on dilution, as the premium pole of the Reus Mercadal line.
Production context
Made in Reus. Botanical maceration plus chestnut-barrel ageing. 15% vol., 1 L. Third Mercadal reference documented at vinumseleccio.com. Part of the triad with Blanc and Negre Tradicional. Vinum Selecció positions Castanyer as the aged summit of the Mercadal project: same local-wine philosophy, added chestnut cask rest. For Vermutpedia, Reserva Castanyer synthesises Reus reserve vermouth: castanyer wood, confit-roasted profile and verifiable documentation at vinumseleccio.com/producto/mercadal-vermut-reserva-castanyer/.
