Peliti's Vermouth Rosso XXII

Overall impression

Vermutpedia is re-evaluating the Italian catalogue; the Vermutpedia Score for this entry remains pending until the new tasting round is complete. Peliti's Vermouth Rosso XXII revives the twenty-second formula that, according to pelitis.com, was for more than sixty years the hallmark of this Moscato-based vermouth. A recipe developed for the British royal household from 1877 until 1940, within the myth of Federico Peliti — confectioner, sculptor and Piedmontese entrepreneur in colonial India. Amarot srl reproduces the original formula in Turin (Corso Galileo Ferraris 16). Peliti's vermouth won medals at international exhibitions in Turin, Paris and Calcutta, according to the brand's official history.

Nose and palate

The website describes a complex aromatic profile with cedar, elderflower and gentian in balance with bitter wormwood and quassia. Dense red-brown colour — the only philological licence for reconstituting the historic product. On the palate, a blend of Indian spices and Piedmontese flowers with the sweetness of Monferrato passito Moscato and bitter wormwood notes; a Belle Époque profile between the exotic and the traditional.

How to serve it

Ideal for a Negroni or an author's Turinese aperitif, according to the dense rosso mixing character the house attributes to the formula. Also on its own, very cold, to appreciate the historic reconstruction without masking the botanicals. Sibling of Bianco XXXVII in the Amarot range.

Production context

Formula XXII, 75 cl, 17% vol. according to the official sheet. Amarot selected two recipes from more than forty in the Peliti recipe book. Product of Amarot srl; contact info@pelitis.com. Historic range verifiable at pelitis.com/IT.html.
