The best French vermouths

Dry Chambéry, Alpine rouge, and author projects: ranking of French vermouths with a published score. Quinquinas and quinados have separate profiles.

France, land of dry vermouth and quinquinas

France gave the world dry Chambéry vermouth (Dolin, Routin, Comoz), Noilly Prat from Marseille, and a whole constellation of quinquinas and herbaceous aperitifs. Today historic brands coexist with projects such as Yellow Vermouth or Maison Aurian reinterpreting Alpine tradition.

At Vermutpedia we have reviewed more than fifty French references, but the catalogue is still growing. This guide ranks the highest-scoring vermouths — we exclude quinquinas and quinados, which have their own family in the catalogue.

How we built this ranking

We rank by Vermutpedia Score (0–10). Only vermouths with a published score appear here; Bonal, Byrrh, or Lillet do not compete in this ranking even though they are quality French aperitifs. See our Chambéry guide to explore the Alpine epicentre.

Top 15 — highest rated

The French catalogue on Vermutpedia is still growing: many bottles remain to be tasted and published. This table includes only vermouths (aromatised wine aperitifs) with a Vermutpedia Score; quinquinas, quinados, and gentian aperitifs are not included in this ranking even when they appear in the France catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best French vermouth according to Vermutpedia?

Check the table at the top: the first position belongs to the French vermouth with the highest published Vermutpedia Score. The podium may change as we add new tastings.

Dolin or Noilly Prat?

Dolin represents the Chambéry school: fine, herbal, versatile in a dry Martini. Noilly Prat is drier and more Mediterranean, built for the classic Martini. Both have full profiles on Vermutpedia.

Why are Bonal or Byrrh not in the ranking?

They are quinquinas or aperitifs from another regulatory family, not vermouths. We review them in the France catalogue, but this ranking compares only aromatised wine aperitifs.

Which French vermouth for a Negroni?

Look for a rouge with body: Dolin Rouge, La Quintinye Rouge, or artisan vermouths from this guide. The French profile tends to be drier than the classic Italian rosso.
